The origin of Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes reminds us that God can do great things through us. In 1998 many families in Wilkes County were in desperate need, so a group of caring citizens organized Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes to fight hunger and food insecurity. Volunteers prepared hot meals on Saturdays and delivered them to suffering families.
By 2009, it became obvious that people needed more than one meal a week, so with the use of a Wilkes Communications building, Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes established a food pantry to provide shopping carts full of a week’s worth of groceries monthly.
This same group of volunteers saw an additional need in the county. Hungry children were receiving free breakfasts and lunches, but they had little to no food from Fridays until Monday morning. You can imagine how anxious they were to get Monday morning breakfast. Samaritan Kitchen filled a need in those children’s stomachs and weekly provides food back packs with seven meals. Very many volunteers, two full-time staff and four part-time staff prepare 750 backpacks every week.Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and improve conditions. Your generous donation will fund our mission.
RETIRED AND BORED?
Help hungry people get groceries.
Hungry children get free lunches on school days, but what about the weekend? Caring teachers and school counselors identify children who are food insecure and volunteers pack 7 meals into bags that go in each child's backpack each weekend.
There are 10,000 people in Wilkes County North Carolina that are food insecure. We collect donated food from local grocers, restaurants and gardeners Monday through Saturday and give people in need 60 pounds of groceries each month.
You could buy this box of crackers for $3 and donate it to Samaritan Kitchen. Or, you could donate $3 to Samaritan Kitchen and with our partner agency Second Harvest, we could purchase all you see above the Food Pantry title to the left.
